2012: A Banner Year Already
Mayor David Coss has officially proclaimed 2012 as Love Your River Year! And thanks to an outpouring of community support, dedicated City of Santa Fe staff, a Mayor who perservered, the Santa Fe City Council passed the Target Flow for a Living River Ordinance and concommitant resolution on February 29th. This is giant step forward for the City of Santa Fe, the Santa Fe River, and our entire community. Thank you to everyone who wrote their representatives, came to the public meetings, and to those who voiced their love and support for our beloved river at the city council meeting. We are the first city in New Mexico to dedicate water to a river for the river's sake.
On March 6th, Santa Fe residents voted in favor of two important Bond Measures, providing much needed capital for many projects pertaining to watershed health. Allocation of funds will support river restoration in the Santa Fe River, arroyo restoration on several major arroyo systems that are tributaries to the river, the development of several parks, and the creation of a water history park and museum. A huge congratulations to Santa Fe for seeing the importance of these projects and contributing their vote of support!
Restoration on the Santa Fe Canyon Preserve began on March 6th. This project, funded by the States River Ecosystem Restoration Initiative and in the works for two years, restores a half mile of the Santa Fe River to its original channel from which it was diverted 100 years ago. Revegetation efforts will begin in April, please contact our office for forthcoming details.
Thanks to the generosity of many NM Climate Masters graduates and the City of Santa Fe, the Santa Fe Watershed Association is carrying the torch and offering another cohort.
