December 13th Minutes!   

Present: Eliza, Ana, Sylka, Eliyah, Karen, Amelia, Darcy, Isaac, Jud, Cora
Thanks to Jud, Amelia and Xing we had some delicious smoothies, cookies and brownies!
*     “Movie with the Mayor” featuring honored guest speaker Mayor Coss followed by a screening of “Chasing Ice”
§  January 17th 7 pm
§  Suggested donation of $5
§  Helping people connect with climate issues through artistic mediums
o   Food + drinks (using club funds)
§  Perhaps using reusable containers

December 6th Meeting Minutes


·      Hi all!
Here are the minutes from last Friday's meeting. Many of you were gone at Speech and Debate or other various activities, so please take a look and let me know if you have any questions!
Also, a reminder, we will be having a bake sale this Tuesday during lunch, so if you're not already on the list, please think about bringing something to sell! (Hopefully another group won't prevent us from selling this time!)

Thursday, November 14th
Hi all,
We had a good meeting Thursday during CAS advisory. Middle schoolers, and those involved in other CAS projects as well: we are still figuring out a system for our weekly meetings so that everyone can attend, and apologize for not having a meeting on Friday!

Things we covered:
·      Movie night
o   Friday, January 17th at 7 pm
o   At Desert
o   Mayor Coss is going to be our honored guest speaker!
o   We decided that we are going to show the documentary “Chasing Ice” since it has the most directed message, but we will try to find another time for a student showing of “All I Can” (the skiing-related documentary) as well!
·      Surveying
o   The electricity and transportation groups continued surveying
§  Isaac finished the online transportation survey and we will be sending it out to parents, faculty and students promptly
o   We are working to finish up the majority of preliminary surveying in the next two weeks or so
·      Blog
o   Just a reminder that if you find any interesting climate-related photos, articles, news, videos, etc. please be sure to share it on the Outdoors Club blog! (http://daoutdoorsclub.blogspot.com/)
·      Fall for Spring
o   Sunday, November 24th will be the Fall for Spring planting day
§  We will be planting daffodils in the front entryway, which will bloom beautifully come spring!
o   Please start telling your parents and friends about it, and encourage them to come help plant
·      Bake sales
o   It would be great if we could start fundraising again. We have Tuesday lunches as our time to sell, and all we need is a couple of people to bring in baked goods.
o   Please email me if you can help sell or bring things in this coming Tuesday!


Friday, October 26
·      Fall for Spring Event
o   Parents come and bring bulbs or donations and we plant in the garden
o   November 9th
o   Use around $100 from grant to buy bulbs
§  Blue crocus and yellow daffodils
o   Currently club has $450

·      Upcoming Events
o   Putting up a gofer fence around the garden with Mr. Richards
o   Saturday October 26th and November 2nd

§  Natural gas usage produces 150,000 lbs. of CO2 every year
§  Electrical usage produces 225,000 lbs. of CO2 every year
§  Total of 375 lbs. of CO2 emissions per year

·      In the US 20% of our carbon footprint is food related
·      Food served on campus
o   We need to find:
§  Bought from where
§  How many people on the program
·      Get list from Liz
§  Recycling and Waste
·      In the US 1/3 of our food is wasted
·      Need more people to not throw recyclable materials in the trash
·      Jud talk to Augie about when they bring trash and recycling to dump
o   We need to find:
§  How much trash goes out every day
§  What people recycle that can’t be recycled
§  What people throw away that can be recycled
§  How much recycling vs. how much trash
·      One building at a time
o   Do this every few months and track improvements
o   Jud, Karen, Jonas, Cassidy, and Amelia working after school some days

Friday, October 11th

·           Main Project – Solarizing Desert
o     Estimated cost for total = $150,000 to 200,000
§  Methods of raising money and materials:
·         Grants
o    From organizations we know from climate night
·         Naomi’s CAS project
·         Bake sales
·         Solar night/climate event
o    Money we raise goes to solar panels
·         Solar panels might provide extra money for the school – then they might sponsor the project

·           Bake Sales
o     Next Tuesday at lunch
§        Amelia and Tyler selling
§        Hailey and Danielle, Jud and Cora bringing food

·                                  Garden and Grounds Work
o     Loving the Lands group – the middle school branch of the club
§        Do landscaping, garden and other outside campus work
·       High school should oversee their work and help include them
§        Talking to middle school about their work – Tuesday during academic advisory (approximately 2:30 – 3:30 after assembly)
·         Email middle school advisors: Natalie, Liz, Sandoval, Randy, and Nevdahl

o    Water collection
§        Currently draining to the road
§        Looking to get underground bladders that collect water and that we can use for watering

§        New method must be active by May 2014, according to some state rule

Hi All,
Thank you for coming last Friday and for bringing such great treats! It was a beautiful day, and for you 9th graders who were not there, we definitely hope to do another one soon (before it gets too chilly).

Our main matters of business were:
*    Naomi’s CAS Project (Solarizing Desert)
o   This will be the Outdoor Clubs’ new project for the year
o   We will help provide fundraising, manpower, publicity
o   Solar Night Event
§  Kind of like Climate Night, but specifically focused on solar
·      Will raise money for installing panels on our school
§  We will need to determine a timeline
*Last year this took us from November to March to get everything arranged, so we’ll have to start soon!
*    Our river cleanup status
o   We are no longer going to be doing river cleanup in the Santa Fe river do to accessibility
o   However, we do plan on adopting an arroyo area on or near our campus
§  Middle Schoolers able to help with cleanup Tuesday afternoons
§  High Schoolers able to do so on Thursday afternoons (CAS activity)
*    Sales
o   Will continue every Tuesday
§  Need people to sign up for each week either to sell or bring food
*    Future of the Outdoors Club and the middle schoolers’ Loving the Land Club
o   Jud, Mr. Alei, Leslie, Mr. Richards and I will all be meeting this Wednesday to discuss how to combine the efforts of both groups

Lastly, I just want to recognize our fantastic new members (middle and high schoolers alike)! We are so excited to have you, and look forward to getting to know you.

o   Scientific Inventory of our current carbon footprint
§  Transportation, food, waste, etc.
§  Judd could have access to carbon footprint-related info for Desert
·      2 weeks from now (?)
o   How to get to zero over time, how to get faculty/staff involved, etc.
§  Compost, lighting replacements, going paperless, etc.
§  CAP gives framework for the big stuff
§  Cutting-Edge Leadership Awesome (CELA) J

o   Silka’s uncle – solar panels from scratch

o   Need a couple of volunteers to help maintain it/restructure it so that we can not only post our own projects/info, but also other local petitions, news, etc.
*     Get to know OC Picnic/Hike
o   tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Sat 28, but open to change
o   still need a location
o   everyone can bring food to share, and it will be a fun opportunity for new members to meet people and to discuss our plans for this year (will need to announce at Assembly once date is finalized)
