Oct 25 Meeting Minutes

·      Fall for Spring Event
o   Parents come and bring bulbs or donations and we plant in the garden
o   November 9th
o   Use around $100 from grant to buy bulbs
§  Blue crocus and yellow daffodils
o   Currently club has $450

·      Upcoming Events
o   Putting up a gofer fence around the garden with Mr. Richards
o   Saturday October 26th and November 2nd
o   11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

·      Other Garden Ideas
o   Planting and selling roses
o   Cactus garden
o   Oasis
§  Nice, secluded space with benches where students can hang out
o   Thursday during CAS advisory is garden action time
§  Cleaning, planting, etc.
o   Hobbit club working only on garden
o   Get a map on which we can identify all the projects going on

·      Climate Action Plan
o   Statistics about our current CO2 emissions
§  Natural gas usage produces 150,000 lbs. of CO2 every year
§  Electrical usage produces 225,000 lbs. of CO2 every year
§  Total of 375 lbs. of CO2 emissions per year
o   Important factors
§  Food
·      In the US 20% of our carbon footprint is food related
·      Food served on campus
o   We need to find:
§  Bought from where
§  How many people on the program
·      Get list from Liz
§  Recycling and Waste
·      In the US 1/3 of our food is wasted
·      Need more people to not throw recyclable materials in the trash
·      Jud talk to Augie about when they bring trash and recycling to dump
o   We need to find:
§  How much trash goes out every day
§  What people recycle that can’t be recycled
§  What people throw away that can be recycled
§  How much recycling vs. how much trash
·      One building at a time
o   Do this every few months and track improvements
o   Jud, Karen, Jonas, Cassidy, and Amelia working after school some days
§  Transportation
·      Commuting surveys
o   How many people
o   How many cars
o   From where
o   Car type
·      Cora & Karen gathering data in the morning
·      Darcy and Isaac writing survey
§  Electricity
·      Electricity audit
o   Count lights in each building
o   What type of light bulbs
·      Find worst type (halogen or CFL’s)
o   Mr. Richards’ estimate for cost of solar panels = ¼ million dollars or more

·      Trips
o   Hiking Rio en Medio
§  Possible dates:
·      November 8th, 9th, 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23rd

o   Spring – backpacking trip – if enough people are interested
